What does document number mean on drivers license

Where is your license number? How do you look up license numbers? This issue tends to come up with New York residents. It is not the same as the drivers license number. In Texas, we have a digit DD number (the letters DD: followed by digits) near the bottom of the card (in the middle, not lower right or on the back).

DD is an abbreviation for “Document Discriminator,” a piece of information that several states started adding to their driver’s licenses.

It uniquely identifies each card that was issued to a given individual. It does not include the driver’s license number. A number of states started adding this piece of information to their driver’s licenses several years ago. It, thus, uniquely identifies each card for a given individual.
